Set up and Manage Calculated Attributes

The Calculated Attribute feature allows you to create fields that Mobio automatically calculates from user behavior data, based on recorded events.

1. Overview

  • Definition: This feature enables Mobio users to create dynamic calculated fields that respond to user interactions.
  • Users: Admin, Marketer, Data Analyst.

2. Terminology & Configuration Parameters

  • Calculation Method: Includes Aggregation (Sum/Average/Maximum/Minimum), Count occurrences, and Occurrence frequency.
  • Default Events: Events predefined by Mobio.
  • Dynamic Events: Events created by Mobio users. Only successfully created events appear for selection.
  • Tracking Events: Track customer engagements on integrated Website or Mobile App. Users must select Website/Mobile App before selecting a tracking event.

3. Prerequisites

  • Access Permissions: Your Mobio account must have the following RBAC permissions: CALCULATED → Settings > Calculated Attribute (See RBAC access permissions setup instructions here).
  • Access Path: Select Settings → Data Management → Calculated Attribute.

4. Step-by-step instructions

4.1. Create New Calculated Attribute

Step 1: Create a formula

  • Click Create Calculated Attribute Formula

Step 2: Enter General Information

  • Enter the name and description for the formula

Step 3: Define Calculation Scope

  • Choose Entity → Profile
  • Turn ON Apply to Segment if you want to apply the formula to a specific Profile segment.
  • Turn OFF “Apply to Segment” to apply the formula to all Profiles in Mobio.
  • Click Continue.

Step 4: Select Calculation Method

  • Select one of the following logic types: Aggregation (SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX), Count occurrences, or Occurrence frequency.

Step 5: Configure Calculated Attribute

  • Select the Event Type: Default Event/Dynamic Event/Tracking Event.
  • Select a specific event. Click Add Attribute to add another attribute to the event.
    • Special Note 1: The list of Event Attributes does NOT include the {action_time} to avoid conflicts with the calculation Time.
    • Special Note 2: For the Occurrence frequency (FIRST/LAST), Mobio supports adding sub-attributes down to level 2. For example, if the attribute is “Products,” you can select sub-attribute “Product Value” (price) or “Product Name” (name).
  • Choose the Calculation Method.
  • Select the period that applies to the Calculated Attribute (Default is 90 days ago). Mobio supports various time ranges such as the past XX days, by month, and by year.
  • The Calculated Attribute’s Value is aggregated from a customer’s entire engagement history, including data from when the customer was an Anonymous Profile until they became an Identified Profile.

Step 6: Configure Calculation Result Field

  • Choose an entity: Profile/Opty/Account.
  • Select Create Field to create a new field to save the calculated result.
  • Click Save.

Step 7: Configure Calculation Frequency

  • Select the One-time mode (for a single calculation) or Scheduled Calculation (Daily, Weekly on specified days, or Monthly repeats on a specified date / Monthly on the first/last day of the month; specified time).
  • Set the validity period of the formula.

Step 8: Review Information and Activate

  • Review the information of the Calculated Attribute.
  • Turn on the Activate toggle.
  • Click Save. Note: Depending on the data volume, the Calculated Attribute may take several hours to calculate for the first session.

4.2. Manage Calculated Attributes

  • View Calculation History: Shows a detailed report of the calculation history, including start and end times, status, and the number of qualified Profiles.
  • Show raw data: Click to view details of a completed calculation session.
    • Note: Raw data is stored and accessible for up to 3 days after the calculation finishes.
  • Edit: Users can change only the general information and calculation frequency of an active formula. When users click Save, a warning is displayed to ensure data integrity.
  • Pause: Toggle ON/OFF on the calculated attribute list.

5. Operating Rules & Use Cases (Application Flow)

Operating Rules

  • The result of a Calculated Attribute Formula is only saved in a new field. Mobio disables overwrite for existing fields.
  • The most recent calculation result will overwrite the previous calculation.
  • If the target segment is archived while a calculation is running, the Calculated Attribute will still run using the segment version before the archive.
  • Deleting a Calculated Attribute Formula will stop all future calculations. However, all generated results remain and will not be deleted.
  • Auto-retry for Calculation Errors: If a calculation session encounters data errors, Mobio automatically retries up to 5 times. After 5 consecutive failures, Mobio will turn off the Formula and pause the calculation flow.

Use Case

  • Aggregation
    • Calculate the total amount purchased by Profiles in the past 30 days.
    • Calculate the average amount purchased by Profiles in the past 60 days.
  • Count occurrences:
    • Calculate the total number of times a Profile purchased from 01/01/2024 – 31/12/2024.
  • Occurrence frequency:
    • The products of the last purchase in the past 30 days.
    • The value of the first order in the past 60 days.
    • The first purchase made in the past 90 days.
